Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 1, 2023, at Friendship Baptist Church in Grenada for Mrs. Thelma Berniece Lane Pettit, 86, of Scobey, who died on Tuesday, June 27, in Jackson. Burial followed in Smith Cemetery in the Rosebloom Community of Tallahatchie County. The Rev. Tim McCaffrey and the Rev. Sherman Barnette officiated.
Berniece was born on Feb. 17, 1937, in Tallahatchie County, the daughter of the late Dee Burnice and the late Wilma Bloodworth Lane. She touched the lives of many children through the years working as an assistant teacher at Sykes Elementary in Jackson and later at Grenada Elementary School. She was a member of Friendship Baptist Church in Grenada. Quilting, gardening and working in her flowers were among Berniece’s favorite pastimes. She will lovingly be remembered as a woman devoted to her family.
In addition to her parents, her husband, Graham Bonner Pettit; one son, Jerry Glen Pettit; one sis-ter, Linda Lane Smith, and one brother, Bubba Lane, preceded Berniece in death.
Survivors include, her daughter, Judy Pettit Sims (Tommy) of Brandon; three sons, Timmy Pettit (Shelley) of Jackson, Danny Pettit (Ronda) of Terry and Jason Pettit (Wendy) of Tillatoba; three sisters, Barbara Dogan, Frances Defenbaugh and Debbie Mitchell; one brother, Dewayne Lane; 12 grandchildren, Mackenzie Pettit, Jordan Martz, Tori Pettit, Taylor Pettit, Morgan Walker, Lane Pet-tit, Jaymes Robinson, Chase Robinson, Alex Threadgill, Elyse Guice, Wade Guice and Chad Guice and 13 great grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Bill Defenbaugh, Rodney Defenbaugh, John Dogan, Allen Harrell, Kent Lane, Glen Mitchell and Lane Pettit. Richie Hines served as an honorary pallbearer.
