The Grenada Police have arrested 18-year-old Jerrian Mekhi Sykes Jr. in connection with the shooting death of 17-year-old L’Zaiyah Jones, Chief George Douglas announced Friday morning.
The Grenada man has been charged with Murder. His bond has been set at $1,000,000. He is currently being held at the Grenada County Jail.
Jones was shot and killed early Wednesday morning on South Levee Street, according to authorities. Chief Douglas said officers responded to reports of a shooting in the 300 block of South Levee Street around 1:46 a.m. When officers arrived, they found 17-year-old L’Zaiyah Jones suffering from a gunshot wound. She was unresponsive at the scene.
Paramedics with MedStat Emergency Medical Services were initially called to the scene. Grenada County Coroner Douglas “Little Bobby” Yates pronounced Jones dead upon his arrival. Jones’ body will be sent to the Mississippi State Crime Laboratory for an autopsy.
“The police immediately began working to determine facts surrounding the shooting,” Douglas said Wednesday night. Authorities have not released additional details about the circumstances of the shooting.
