A private family graveside service was recently held in Oddfellows Cemetery in Greenwood for Mr. Riley Barber Overbey Sr., 94, of Grenada, who died on Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2024, in Grenada.
Riley was born on Oct. 6, 1929, in Greenwood, the son of the late Walter John and the late Ollie Hendon Overbey. He owned and operated Overbey Electric in Greenwood for more than 30 years and cherished the relationships he had with his many customers, which also became friends. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Greenwood and also held memberships in the National Rifle Association and the Big D Hunting Club in Black Hawk where he had served as president for many years. Riley loved to work and took great pride in the work he did. He never met a stranger and was quick to nickname his family and friends.
In addition to his parents, his wife, Hazel Chaney Overbey; sons, Riley B. Overbey Jr. and Dennis Lamar Overbey; sisters, Mary Elizabeth Overbey and Betty Overbey Hodges, and one brother, Arthur L. Overbey, preceded Riley in death.
Survivors include, his daughters, Mary O. Heffner (Ricky) of Ferriday, La., and Betty O. Strickland (Jimmie) of Grenada; one brother, Walter John Overbey of Germantown, Tenn.; daughter-in-law, Sammie Overbey of Grenada; seven grandchildren, Amy H. Campbell, Amber H. Watson, Brittany O. Ware, Christopher Overbey, Heather Boone, Melissa O. Smith and Riley B. Overbey III and 14 great grandchildren.
