Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2023, at Rosebloom Church of the Nazarene for the Rev. Phillip Ray Bumpers, 76, of Grenada, who died on Saturday, Oct. 14, at his residence. Burial followed in Strider-Burt Cemetery. The family received friends from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Monday evening, Oct. 16, at McKibben and Guinn Funeral Service and one hour prior to the service on Tuesday, Oct. 17, at Rosebloom Church of the Nazarene.
The Rev. Bumpers was born on Sept. 28, 1947, in Jackson, Ala., the son of the late Clyde Franklin Bumpers and the late Sallie Francis Motes Bumpers. A devoted pastor, he served in the Methodist-Protestant Church at Yazoo City, Jackson (Ala.) Church of the Nazarene, Sunflower Church of the Nazarene (Merigold), Rosebloom Church of the Nazarene, Oxford Church of the Nazarene and culminated his service with a pastorate that spanned more than 20 years at Nabors Memorial Church of the Nazarene near Senatobia. Bro. Bumpers, as many referred to him, was a faithful follower of Jesus and remained faithful to the end. A devoted family man, Bro. Bumpers enjoyed any time he got to spend with his family. He enjoyed cheering on the Auburn Tigers and was a skilled small engine repairman.
In addition to his parents; three sisters, Francis Bayles, Marcy Gates and Carol Butts; one brother, Louis Bumpers, and one grandson, John Phillip Pollan, preceded the Rev. Bumpers in death.
Survivors include, his wife of 48 years, Linda Montgomery Bumpers; two daughters, Sarah Wilkerson (Ed) of Grenada and Susan Rowe (Scott) of Willard, Mo.; two sisters, Ellen Roe of Salipta, Ala., and Jane Roberts (Charlie) of Jackson, Ala., and four grandchildren, Olivia Brown (Calop), Faith Kelley, Trevor Kelley and Eli Pollan.
