With the arrival of a new year brings a special election that will be held for a seat in the state house.
Charles Jim Beckett was a member of the Mississippi House of Representatives, representing District 23. He resigned his seat and left the office in September 2022, after Gov. Tate Reeves appointed him as executive director for the Mississippi Public Utilities staff.
Three candidates are on the ballot for the District 23 House of Representative position including Perry Van Bailey, Andy Clark and Andy Stepp.
The special election will be held Jan. 10, and will cover portions of Calhoun, Grenada, Lafayette and Webster counties. Precincts within District 23 in Grenada County are; Southside Church of Christ, Grenada County Office, Gore Springs Community Center, Futheyville First Pentecost, Mt. Nebo Young Water and Sewer and Pleasant Grove Community Center.
According to Grenada County Circuit Clerk Michele Redditt-Garcia, not everyone in these precincts is eligible to vote. Voters must call or visit the Grenada County Courthouse to check eligibility. You may also visit the polls on Election Day.
Absentee voting is open and available for those that are able to vote for this special election. In-person absentee voting can be done during regular operating business hours from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 8 a.m. until noon on Saturday Jan. 7, at the Grenada County Circuit Clerk office. This is the last day those ballots will be accepted.
Absentee ballot voting was also available on Saturday, Dec. 31, 2022.
