Funeral Services were held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 12, 2023, at Shiloh Baptist Church in Big Creek to celebrate the life of Jessie Mae “Lucy” Wright, 84, of Coffeeville, who died on Wednesday, Nov. 8, in Charleston. Burial followed in Shiloh Cemetery. Bro. Mark Longino officiated and Bro. Truman Scarbrough delivered the eulogy. Visitation was held from 1 p.m. until service time on Sunday, Nov. 12, at Shiloh Baptist Church.
Lucy was born on Oct. 2, 1939, in Yalobusha County, the daughter of the late Louis Redwine and the late Vera Melton Redwine. On Aug. 16, 1958, she married the love of her life, John Wright, and they spent more than 56 wonderful years together until his passing in 2014. She attended Coffeeville High School and was a faithful member of Shiloh Baptist Church. She loved her church and her church family. She was a member of WMU, taught Sunday school and kept the nursery.
Lucy worked at Kellwood for a time, but spent most of her life caring for others – from babysitting the neighborhood children to sitting with the elderly women and helping them around the house. She loved sewing and crocheting, and was a wonderful cook. She made the best cathead biscuits and loved feeding people, and made you eat dessert no matter how full you were. She loved arts and crafts at the nursing home, and spent a lot of her time making dolls for little girls, which brought her so much joy. She was a precious soul and a very kind and sweet Christian woman. Her memory will be forever cherished in the hearts of her family and friends.
In addition to her parents and husband, her sisters, Louise Strickland and Cornelia Redwine; brothers, Louis Redwine Jr., Tommy Redwine, Era Redwine, Luther “Buddy” Redwine and Edward Redwine, and nephew, Patrick Redwine, preceded Lucy in death.
Survivors include, her daughter, Diana Childs, and her husband, Donald, of Grenada; sons, John Robert Wright, and his wife, Dawn, of Grenada and Sterling Wright and his wife, Marie, of Calhoun City; brother, Billy Redwine, of Coffeeville; four grandsons; two great grandsons; one great granddaughter on the way and several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Austin Wright, Jared Wright, Jordan Childs, Dustin Wright, Slade Redwine, Derrick Redwine and Phil Harrison.
The family would like to give special thanks to the wonderful staff of Tallahatchie Extended Care for their love and kindness during Lucy’s stay.
