Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 27, 2023, at McKibben and Guinn Funeral Service in Grenada for Mrs. Helen Fowler Gordon, 97, of Sweatman, who died on Friday, Nov. 24, in Grenada. Burial followed in Gordon Cemetery in Sweatman. Bro. Cole Surrell officiated. The family received friends from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. on Sunday afternoon, Nov. 26, and one hour prior to the service on Monday, Nov. 27, all at McKibben and Guinn.
Mrs. Gordon was born on Nov. 13, 1926, in Sweatman, the daughter of the late Roscoe and the late Thelma Butts Fowler. She was a faithful and devoted member of the Red Hill Church of Christ. She devoted more than 35 years of her life to the service of others as a social worker with the Mississippi Department of Human Services.
Mrs. Gordon possessed a deep love for the outdoors and found great pleasure in mowing her yard and working in her flowers. Above all, she enjoyed spending time with her family and cherished those special memories she was able to make with them during her lifetime.
In addition to her parents, her husband, Robert Taylor Gordon Sr.; one son, Robert Taylor Gordon Jr.; sisters, Frankie Marter and Catherine Jenson, and one brother, Drew Fowler, preceded Mrs. Gordon in death.
Survivors include, her daughters, Diane Whitfield (Larry), Sherry Gordon and Cathy Sykes (Mike), all of Sweatman; one son, Roger Gordon, of Sweatman; one brother, Bidwell Fowler, of Madison; nine grandchildren, Gordon Whitfield, Brandon Whitfield, Tate Gordon, Amanda Cobb, Andrew Gordon, Tuesdie Renfrow, Brittany Bachelor, Brian Sykes and Meggie McKay; 20 great grandchildren and 14 great-great grandchildren.
Caleb Bachelor, B.J. McKay, Maddox Renfrow, Ryan Renfrow, Brian Sykes, Brandon Whitfield and Gordon Whitfield honored Mrs. Gordon by serving as pallbearers and carried her to rest in Gordon Cemetery.
