Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 15, 2024, at McKibben and Guinn Funeral Service in Grenada for Mr. George Curtis Blakely, 84, of Coffeeville, who died on Tuesday, Feb. 13, at his residence. Burial followed in Woodlawn Memorial Park. The Rev. Janie Mortimer and Bro. Ken Salley officiated. Family and friends gathered from noon until service time on Thursday, Feb. 15, at McKibben and Guinn.
George was born on June 7, 1939, in Grenada County, the son of the late Rufus and the late Annie Anderson Blakely. He enjoyed a 42-year career at Heatcraft in Grenada and treasured the many friendships he made with his co-workers. A faithful Methodist, he was proud to tell anyone that the Rev. Johnny Dinas baptized him and wanted everyone he encountered to have a relationship with Jesus Christ.
A true sports enthusiast, George loved to keep up with all Mississippi State Athletics as well as the St. Louis Cardinals. In his earlier years, he enjoyed officiating basketball games in the Mississippi Private School Association. An avid outdoorsman, George enjoyed fishing and hunting in his spare time. George will long be remembered as a man who loved the Lord, his family and friends.
In addition to his parents, six sisters, Frances Denley, Earline Harris, Bertha Inman, Annette Sanders, Beulah Hubbard and Lottie Toole, and his brothers, John Blakely, L.D. Blakely and Herbert Blakely, preceded George in death.
Survivors include, his wife, Faye McCalop Blakely; son, George Blakely Jr. of Grenada; grandchildren, Kurt Blakely and Kayla Franklin (Kyle), all of Grenada; one great granddaughter, Kimber Franklin of Grenada; sister, Minnie McMinn (Bill) of Coffeeville and sisters-in-law, Joan McDaniel and Glenda Sides.
