In three years, Michael Fair compiled a 32-9 record as head football coach at Grenada High School. Thursday, the veteran coach made it official that he is taking over at perennial power South Panola.
Fair replaces Brooks Oakley, who resigned in November 2025, following the Tigers’ 28-27 playoff loss to Neshoba Central.
It was a decision that didn’t come easy for the Carroll County native.
“This is the hardest professional decision that I have ever had to make and it’s because of this place,” Fair said from his office Thursday afternoon. “This community has embraced me and my family – it’s unlike any other place I have been. This place will always be special to Robin and I and our children. I will never forget the relationships that I have made and the success that we were able to have with these players – it’s been pretty special for sure.”
For Fair, the move allows him to come full circle in his career. His first coaching position was at the Batesville school more than two decades ago. The man, who hired him, Del Phillips, is now the Superintendent of the South Panola School District.
“Robin and I put a lot of thought and prayer into this decision,” Fair said. “We feel like this is the next move for us as a family. It’s a good opportunity and allows me to go back where I started my career 25 years ago. I fell in love with coaching football at that place and when this opportunity came open the second time around it felt like the thing to do.”
Fair came to Grenada in February 2024, replacing Ashley Kuhn, who retired after serving 12 years at the school.
Grenada School District Athletic Director Dr. Lyle Williams had nothing but accolades for Fair.
“Coach Fair has done an incredible job at Grenada,” Dr. Williams said. “I appreciate what he has done. The last three seasons have been an amazing ride. Michael and his family will be missed. I wish him the best of luck – except when he is playing Grenada. Go Chargers!”
Williams said the job opening announcement will be posted on the Mississippi High School Activities Association and Grenada School District websites Friday morning.
