The National Weather Service out of Jackson has issued a Tornado Watch for Grenada County and nearly 50 other Mississippi counties until 10 p.m. tonight, Wednesday, April 13.
According to the watch, the potential for severe thunderstorms that could produce tornadoes is likely.
“Significant severe thunderstorms and tornadoes are likely through this evening, with strong tornadoes possible,” the watch reads. “Some thunderstorms could also produce damaging winds up to 70 mph and large hail up to at least golf ball size.”
Localized flash flooding is possible through tonight, particularly in low lying and urban areas. Minor river flooding is also possible, according to the NWS.
“Weak trees and limbs may break and fall due to strong winds apart from thunderstorm activity,” the watch continues. “Sustained winds up to 25 mph and wind gusts around 35 mph will be possible through this evening. Driving high-profile vehicles could be difficult.”
Schools in the Grenada County School District released students just after 12:30 p.m. today, so buses would be off the roads when the storms arrive. Radar shows that the first series of heavy rains will arrive in Grenada County between 4:45 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.
The Grenada Star will post watches, warnings and closures on its Facebook page as the information is made available.
