Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2024, at Wells Funeral Home in Batesville for Katherine Doubleday “Susie” Carvan, 81, who died on Monday, Jan. 29, in Oxford. Burial followed in Chapel Hill Cemetery in Pope where she was laid to rest beside her husband.
Susie was born on Jan. 7, 1943, in Yalobusha County. She was a retired seamstress at the former Panola Mills. She enjoyed being outside and staying busy, whether she was tending her chickens, gardening, fishing or canning fruits and vegetables. Susie found joy in drinking her morning coffee and taking care of others.
Her husband of 59 years, Willie Lee Carvan, and five brothers, Donald Eugene Doubleday, Thomas Doubleday, Joe Doubleday, Jessie Martin Doubleday and Sam Doubleday, preceded Susie in death.
Survivors include, her two children, Vicky Thomas (Don) of Grenada and Ricky Carvan (Bernita) of Oakland; her sister, Lovell Vance (Bud) of Greenwood; four brothers, Bill Doubleday (Faye) of Oakland, David Doubleday (Cathy) of Batesville, Lewis Doubleday (Linda) of Pope and Barry Lee Doubleday of Oakland; five grandchildren, Les Thomas, Christy Tribble (Josh), Ricky Lyle Carvan, April Long (Charles) and Amanda Nicole Carvan; nine great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be directed in Susie’s honor to the American Cancer Society.
