Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 23, 2024, at McKibben and Guinn Funeral Service in Grenada for Gloria Francis Norris Pomeranz, 86, of New York City, N.Y., formerly of Holcomb, who died on Thursday, Feb. 15, at her residence. Burial will follow in Holcomb Cemetery. Family and friends will gather one hour prior to the service on Friday, Feb. 23, at McKibben and Guinn.
Mrs. Pomeranz graduated magna cum laude from the University of Southern Mississippi and obtained her master’s degree from Ohio State University. A celebrated author, she published three books, “The Working Mother’s Handbook” (co-authored by Jo Ann Miller), “Looking for Bobby” and “Highway 51.” She also wrote several short stories, which appeared in “The Sewanee Review.” She received the O. Henry Award for “Three Stories,” an anthology.
Also, Mrs. Pomeranz was the editor in chief of the Book of the Month Club. She served on the literary board of the club. In addition, she was listed as one of “America’s 100 Most Important Women” in 1983, in the “Ladies’ Home Journal” and The Mississippi Woman of the Year in 1986.
Her parents, Carmel and Mary Ella Norris; her sister, Sylvia Norris King; one nephew, Allen Lanier King Jr., and one great nephew, Jayden Eaves, preceded Mrs. Pomeranz.
Left to cherish her memories include, her husband, Gary Pomeranz; nieces, Olivia (Don) Stewart of Winder, Ga., and Pam (Jeff) Williams and Gloria (Steve) Hastings, all of Chattanooga, Tenn.; one great nephew, Tony (Sharon) Stewart of Pyeongtaek, South Korea; great nieces, Lisa (Tommy) Boyd of Hoschton, Ga., Mary (Dean) Dial of Chattanooga, Tenn., and their children, Evan Stewart, Olivia Boyd and Kinzie Eaves Dial. She is also survived by a sister-in-law, Barbara Kantoff, and one nephew, Howard Kantoff.
