The Town of Duck Hill passed a resolution to request a two percent tourism tax from the Mississippi Legislature.
Mayor Al White said the town had to pass a resolution to send to the legislature in order for the legislature to vote if Duck Hill will receive the funds or not. The two percent tax is a tax that is placed on restaurants and businesses in Duck Hill that serve hot food items.
“Now, this is just me, but I don’t see a reason for us to get it. We don’t have anything here,” Alderwoman Lula Brown said.
“We have people come through here all the time. Vaiden raked in $15,000 in their tourism tax, and they’re the same size as we are,” White said. The Town of Vaiden levied their tax in 2018. The towns of Carrollton, North Carrollton, and Winona also have levied a two percent tourism tax.
White said the money from the taxes would go toward updating recreational equipment in Duck Hill.
“We need better recreational equipment for our youth, and our parks need upgrading,” he told the board.
The next step is to send the resolution before the legislation. If it is passed, the measure is then voted on by the residents of Duck Hill before it is levied.
