Deer are on the move in Grenada earlier than usual this year, with sightings reported throughout the city in mid- to late August and most recently during the first week of September.
Residents have spotted deer in the edges of wooded areas, open fields and subdivisions, but sightings have also become more unusual. Several drivers have reported deer crossing major roads near town, and surveillance cameras at the Grocery Basket captured at least one deer wandering through the store’s parking early one morning in late August.
Wildlife officials said the activity is noteworthy because deer in north Mississippi usually do not become this visible until later in the fall, when rutting season begins. Early movement may be tied to fluctuating temperatures, food availability and crop harvests that shift deer into more visible areas.
Authorities are reminding residents that deer activity near roadways increases the chance of collisions and are urging people to remain cautious.
Safety tips from wildlife officials include:
• Drive cautiously at dawn and dusk, when deer are most active.
• Slow down and use high beams when possible in rural or wooded areas.
• If a deer crosses the road, expect others to follow close behind.
• Never swerve sharply to avoid a deer, as it can cause a more serious crash.
• Keep an eye out for deer in unexpected places, including neighborhoods and parking lots.
Local residents are encouraged to report unusual sightings to the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks if deer behavior poses safety concerns.
