Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse and the Easter Bunny joined several local businesses last Saturday on Grenada’s Downtown Square for the second annual Cottontails Candy Carcade.
Miranda Slade and Amy James, members of Grenada Downtown District, were pleased with the turnout during last weekend’s event.
“I think it went better than expected; it definitely topped last year’s event by far,” James said.
Local businesses set up booths all throughout the Square for children to stop by and play games and receive candy. Local participants included, La Bella Fonte Galleria, Shelter Insurance, The Grenada Garden Club, Sta-Home Health & Hospice, The Nest Egg, Grenada Dermatology, Square Market, Holmes Community College, Enon Baptist Church, Huckleberry Finds and Smock A Tot Grenada.
Grenada High School’s Band set up a face painting booth and received a big turn out at its table.
“The face painting booth went over real well,” Slade said. “The kids loved it.”
Grenada High’s “Pure Imagination” robotics team also brought their robot bunny and played an egg drop game with the children.
Kirk Auto Company sponsored pony rides for the children and Mary Berry Balloons with the help of her sponsors, Blooming Hills Farm, C&R Construction, Bank Plus and Central Insurers was on hand to provide balloon art.
A Duck, Duck game was manned and sponsored by Cross Country Seeds, while the inflatable fun couldn’t have been made possible without Ms. Mary’s Little Learners, Edward Jones (Keith Bloodwork) and an anonymous sponsor who donated a piece of Peter’s Pottery to auction off to help raise funds for the event.
Friends of Grenada Animal Shelter offered an “Adopt-a-Stuffie” booth. Each stuffed animal that was adopted came with its very own adoption certificate and information on how to properly care for your new pet and the responsibilities of pet ownership. Funds raised by the adoption will be used to support the work Friends of Grenada does and to bring awareness to animal protection programs and what others can do if they find an animal that needs help.
“More than 100 stuffed animals were adopted,” Slade said. “The community really showed up and made this a great event.”
Several local businesses that could not attend Saturday made donations to help support the downtown event.
“We purchased candy, but without the help from different businesses in town, this trunk-or-treat would have been slim,” James said.
Candy sponsors included, Stats on the Square, Lofts on the Square, Grocery Basket, Hampton Inn & Suites, Ohlis Paint & Interior, Stanford Medical, Marlow Law Firm, Sparklight and The Grenada Star.
“Any monetary donations that were not used will be used for our Founder’s Day event that will be coming up soon,” James added.
Crane’s Tax Service and Auto Obsession sponsored the Easter Bunny, along with Mickey and Minnie.
“We are truly grateful to all those that participated and to those that donated,” Slade concluded. “This could not have happened without you all and we are already looking forward to doing this again next year.”
