Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 3, 2023, at McKibben and Guinn Funeral Service in Grenada for Mr. Alan Roger Smith, 76, of Grenada, who died on Wednesday, May 24, with his loving wife by his side. Burial followed in the Merigold Cemetery. The Rev. Anthony Prestage officiated. The family received friends one hour prior to the service time on Saturday, June 3, at McKibben and Guinn.
Roger was born on Oct. 23, 1946, the son of the late Archie Franklin Smith and the late Gladys Elveretta Eckstein Smith. He was a graduate of Cleveland High School, received a bachelor’s degree from Memphis State and a master’s degree at Louisiana State University School of Banking. He spent many years in a career of banking until he retired as president of the Bank of Ruleville. While in Ruleville, he served in the Lions Club and Rotary Club serving his community. In later years, he ventured into a life of long-haul trucking and enjoyed for the most part seeing our beautiful country. Roger also loved hunting with the men and sometimes fishing.
In addition to his parents, his only sibling brother, Paul Smith, preceded Roger in death.
Survivors include, his wife, Julia Burke Smith; his children, Alan Roger Smith II (Barb) of Nolansville, Tenn., Alecia Diane Smith Reese (William) of Hernando; Donovan Dwain Lasyone (Isabel) of Clint, Texas, and Tina Lasyone Parker (Paul Pannell) of Cleveland; 10 grandchildren, Evan Smith, Corinne Smith, Mackenzie Reese, Amanda Reese, Preston Reese, Christen Sosa (Ivan), Catrina Burnett (Andrew), Nathaniel Lasyone (Mia), Colby Parker and Brett Myers and two great grandchildren, Hannah Sosa and Lukas Sosa with a third, James Burnett, on the way.
Pallbearers were his grandchildren, Colby Parker, Nathan Lasyone, Preston Reese, Brett Myers, Andrew Burnett and Ivan Sosa. Honorary pallbearers were Ben Smith, Michael Smith, Kevin Burke, Robert Burke and Stephen Linzay.
