Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 23, 2025, at Friendship Baptist Church for Mr. William Dotson “Dot” Proctor, 97, of Grenada, who died on Saturday, Jan. 18, at his residence. Burial followed in Oddfellows Cemetery. The Rev. Tim McCaffrey officiated and his nephew, the Rev. Tony Proctor, assisted.
Dot was born on Aug. 4, 1927, in Bells, Tenn., the son of the late Stylon and the late Olive Burns Proctor. At a very young age, he found out by visiting some of his cousins that played music that he wanted to play music, too. At age 6 or 7, he begged his Daddy to buy him a guitar. He said by the time his mother had breakfast fixed he had learned to pick “You Are My Sunshine.” This began a lifetime of a hobby that brought him much joy and many friendships.
Dot farmed in several states, then built roads, turnpikes and bridges through several states as well. Throughout his life, he still played music for his family. After he retired, he began playing the mandolin again. Dot played with several bands and friends for nursing homes, benefits, festivals and churches. Dot loved God and his church family who were a comfort and support to him.
In addition to his parents, his wife of 59 years, Ouida Barr Proctor; one son, Tommy Proctor, and his brother, Farris Proctor, preceded Dot in death.
Survivors include, his daughters, Connie McDonald (Eddie) and Sheila Barfield; one son, Steven Proctor (Myron); seven grandchildren; eight great grandchildren and 10 great-great grandchildren.
Chris Beard, Chip Graham, John Green, Samy McCracken, Tim Pearson, Steven Thomas Proctor and Andy Walters honored Dot by serving as pallbearers and carried him to rest in Oddfellows Cemetery. Red Anderson, Jimmy Hamilton, Larry Pickle and Bobby White served as
