Parker High School head football coach Frank Warren needed a game for his 2024 schedule. He got one and his Thundering Herd also got a valuable lesson.
This week, when Parker travels to Carrollton, Ga., for the return trip of the two-game contract, the Herd is riding a 14-game winning streak and carrying the memory of the school᧙s first Alabama High School Athletic Association state championship.
Last year, we were looking for a game around this week and Carrollton called and said they were looking, too, Warren said. They hit me up on my DM. In my mind, I think we can play anybody, so we locked in for two years.
The Birmingham News Game of the Week at Carrollton᧙s Grisham Stadium is Friday at 6:30 p.m.
We learned last year (in a 48-26 loss) that you can᧙t make the mistakes that we made and win, Warren said. We had two blocked punts, two blocked field goals and a ****ed punt. All of them resulted in touchdowns for Carrollton. They whipped us on special teams and we learned that all three phases of the game matter.
As coaches and players, we learned from that game. The caliber team we played, we felt like we were the same type team, but they were better than us on special teams. They capitalized on mistakes we made. We knew that we couldn᧙t make those kinds of mistakes and get to the championship game.
Parker did not have another blocked kick after the loss and started its 10-game winning streak the next week that culminated in the Class 6A championship.
Now 4-0 and ranked first in the Alabama Sports Writers Association poll, the Herd will be facing a 5-0 Carrollton squad that is ranked third in Georgia ᧓ after finishing 14-1 in 2024 with a second-place finish in the state᧙s largest classification.
I know they are good, Warren said of the Trojans. They have a couple of guys committed to Georgia, Georgia Tech. It᧙s a hotbed of recruiting over there. It᧙s a great challenge, but that᧙s what we want.
Carrollton has 4-star Ryan Mosley, a 6-foot-4, 206-pound wide receiver, who has pledged to play at UGA. Interior offensive lineman Zykie Helton, a 3-star recruit according to 247sports also committed to Georgia, is 6-2 and 290 pounds. Cornerback Dorian DB Barney is a 4-star 6-1, 180-pound prospect who has committed to the University of Michigan.
