The title sounds kinda morbid, but this topic is something that the Extension Service has started pushing a little. Extension covers a lot of things. If you know me, which you probably do if you are reading this, then you know it covers all kinds of agriculture and natural resource issues. These include rowcrops, cattle, forestry, vegetables, lawns, turf, beef, wildlife, and ornamentals. It also covers youth and 4H and things like family and consumer services such as health, nutrition, financial, and childcare. Technology after you die is a topic that has become more critical in the last 15 years.
Think about how the world is now. So much stuff is technology and computer driven. You cannot go to the convenience store and buy a candy bar without using that computer at the cash register. If the card reader goes down or the internet goes down then everything stops. This applies to your own personal life now. What is going to happen if something happens to you? Can your spouse or kids or just your lawyer who is taking care of your property access everything that they need to? I am not saying that someone should have all your passwords, account numbers, etc. However, someone should know where those items can be found. How many “accounts” do you have on line? Amazon, Ebay, Walmart, Cabelas, etc. All these accounts you have opened up have user names and passwords.
How about your social media like Facebook, Twitter, Messenger, etc. all have account names and passwords. If something happens to you all these things need to be found and closed properly so that your family does not receive a large bill or some information that should not be made public gets put out there for everyone to see.
In this day and time so much stuff is conducted online in some sort or fashion. While you may know where all of it is, your grown kids or whomever you have designated to take care things when you are no longer with us may not. Work up a list of all this type of information and keep it in a safe place. Somewhere that someone can have access to at the right time. It can save everyone including you some headaches and heartaches.
