EDITOR'S NOTE: Late Wednesday afternoon, Grenada County Emergency Operations Center Director Trebia Rodgers informed The Star that the county's request for a burn ban through the first week of November has been approved.
After supposedly having, not having and then actually having a burn ban, the Grenada County Board of Supervisors voted to extend the current burn ban to Nov. 6, during its first October meeting held Monday.
Trebia Rodgers, Emergency Operations Center Director, requested the original ban on Sept. 5, but it was denied by the Mississippi Forestry Commission on Sept. 15, after having thought the ban was in place. Rodgers later spoke with the state forester after the denial and submitted a second request on Sept. 26, which was formally approved on Sept. 28.
The current ban is scheduled to expire on Oct. 7.
Rodgers submitted a request to the Forestry Commission on Monday to extend the ban beyond this Saturday and is awaiting approval from them.
“We felt a burn ban needs to be extended because Grenada County is currently in a severe drought with very little rain in sight,” she said. “Since Aug. 1, we have had 35 reported grass fires.”
If the application is approved, the burn ban would be extended the additional month.
The ban exempts the Mississippi Forestry Commission, certified burn managers, commercial contractors and agriculture field burns.
