In the early morning hours on Monday, March 20, the Grenada Fire Department responded to a house fire near the 700 block of South Line Street.
The first GFD unit arrived at 2:01 a.m. and reported that the fire had burned through the roof. According to GFD officials, additional units were dispatched and fire crews attempted to go upstairs to extinguish the seat of the fire.
It was reported that heavy fire and heat upstairs caused the ceiling to collapse and crews were ordered out of the building to perform an exterior attack.
An estimated 4,000 gallons of water was used. At 5:20 a.m., when the fire was declared under control, crews re-entered the home to extinguish hot spots.
At 7 a.m., the GFD went through a shift change and the new fire crew continued salvage and overhaul efforts, with the last unit leaving the scene at 8:52 a.m.
One firefighter was injured and transported to the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Grenada. The firefighter was treated for dehydration and was able to return to work on Wednesday, March 22.
The fire is still under investigation, but appears it originated in the attic.
