The National Weather Service in Jackson and Grenada County EMA/911 officials are making preparations for a significant severe weather event that is predicted to develop throughout the region late this afternoon.
Beginning around 5 p.m. and continuing throughout the night and into early Saturday morning, Grenada is listed as a moderate risk for possible tornadoes with some being strong and long-tracked. Damaging wind gusts of up to 80 mph and large hail are likely through much of the northeast portion of Mississippi.
Grenada County EMA/911 Director Trebia Rodgers announced Friday morning that her office will open the safe room located at 260 Mondy Rd., prior to the severe weather threat.
“The safe room will open at 4 p.m. unless the system of storms move in faster than expected,” she said.
According to the NWS, another round of storms with severe potential exists for Sunday.
“Please have multiple means to receive weather notifications,” Rodgers said. “It is important during the event of severe weather that you monitor the forecast, have multiple ways to receive alerts and to know your safe place.”
The Grenada Star will share up-to-date information throughout the day and night regarding any weather updates and hazardous conditions as it becomes available.
