The Grenada School District announced Wednesday afternoon that all of its campuses and offices will remain closed the rest of the week due to ongoing recovery efforts from Winter Storm Fern and the severe ice that struck Grenada County last week.
The closure affects Grenada Lower and Upper Elementary schools, Grenada Middle School, Grenada High School, the Grenada Career & Technical Center, the Grenada Enrichment & Transition Center and the District’s Central Office. District officials made the announcement just before 1 p.m. Wednesday, citing continued power outages and hazardous conditions around several school properties.
Electricity has yet to be fully restored across the District’s campuses. The elementary complex sustained heavy damage, with downed poles and power lines blocking roadways in and out of the school, according to officials. Utility companies continue working to repair infrastructure, but some neighborhoods and public facilities remain without electricity, water service or both. Power restoration across Grenada County for Entergy Mississippi customers is expected to be completed by Sunday, Feb. 1.

Kirk Academy, the county’s private school, also announced shortly after 1 p.m. Wednesday that it would also remain closed Thursday and Friday as restoration and cleanup efforts continue.
Both school systems have been reassessing conditions daily since the storm, announcing closures each afternoon. School leaders said once electricity is restored, schools will need to inspect buildings for damage to equipment and technology, discard spoiled food and ensure all safety systems are working before reopening.
Internet access has also been periodically disrupted throughout the week as utility crews continue making repairs across the county.
In addition, all classes at all locations of Holmes Community College will remain virtual through Monday. Students are asked to continue to check Canvas for assignments.
The Star will continue to post Winter Storm Fern news updates and alerts as new information is made available.
