Third-year Grenada High School head football coach Michael Fair found himself scrambling for an opponent to open the 2025 season earlier this year. The opening came when a scheduling conflict forced the Aug. 29 home game with Class 5A opponent Clarksdale to be canceled.
The lateness of the cancellation forced Fair to take to the internet, looking for a team to fill the void and more importantly one that would travel to Grenada.
A familiar foe, Pine Bluff., Ark., High School popped up and Fair contact Head Coach Michael Williams. The Zebras came to Grenada in 2024, and lost a 30-7 decision to the Chargers as GHS finished second in Class 6A.
“It was really late – like mid-April when I found out that Clarksdale was not going to play us,” Fair said. “I got on internet and looked at Mississippi and the surrounding states for a game. One of the first ones I saw was Pine Bluff, Ark. I have great relationship with the coach having played two years ago. We reached out to them and were able to work things out for them to come to Grenada on Aug. 29.”
The game replacement keeps the Chargers at four home games, which allows fans to pack Charger Stadium.
“With us getting two home Region games, we needed another home game,” Fair concluded. “Pine Bluff will be a formidable opponent.”
Fair also announced that GHS will host Holmes County Central for its jamboree on at 6 p.m. on Aug. 22.
