A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 23, 2024, at St. Matthew’s United Methodist Church in Madison for Mrs. Roxie Pittman Abel, 90, of Duck Hill, who died on Saturday, Dec. 7, in Ridgeland. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until service time at the church. Funeral services will follow at 3 p.m. in the Oliver Funeral Home Chapel in Winona. Visitation will be held one hour prior to service. The Rev. Andy Stoddard will officiate the services. Burial will follow in Duck Hill Cemetery in Duck Hill.
Mrs. Abel was born on Jan. 8, 1934, the daughter of the late Keith Lipe and the late Mattie Mae Hemphill Pittman. She was a member of Red Hill Church of Christ near Alva. She graduated from Alva High School Magna Cum Laude. She attended the University of Mississippi where she obtained a master’s degree in elementary education, English and counseling. She graduated Magna Cum Laude and was a member of Phi Kappa Phi. Mrs. Abel taught in the Duck Hill and Winona elementary school systems for more than 34 years.
In addition to her parents, her husband, Henry Travis Abel, preceded Mrs. Abel in death.
Survivors include, her two daughters, Donna Kaye Abel Herring of Ridgeland and Tuddy Marimae Abel Ryan of Rockwall, Texas; three grandchildren, Bryan “Chip” Herring (Katherine) of Ridgeland, Sean Travis Ryan (Sarah) of Rowette, Texas and Shannon Eileen Ryan Sheehan (Michael) of East Rutherford, N.J., and three great grandchildren, Blaire Herring, Katie Herring and Anne Travis Herring.
