Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 9, 2022, at Charleston Church of God for Mr. Robert Flynn Hargett, 88, who died on Saturday, Aug. 6. Burial followed in Charleston City Cemetery. The family received friends one hour prior to the service on Tuesday, Aug. 9, at the church.
Robert was a great sportsman that enjoyed coaching baseball and softball. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, golfer, mechanic that worked on golf carts and vehicles and also sold used cars. He served one term as president of Charleston Country Club and served his country in the United States Army. He was a member of Charleston Church of God for 47-plus years where he served as church clerk for 30 of those years, oversaw the property maintenance there and did whatever needed to be done around the church.
His parents, Barney Flynn and Frankie Champion Hargett; his daughter, Kim Newton; two sisters, Earline Powell and Maxine Serio, and one brother, Claude Hargett, preceded Robert in death.
Survivors include, his wife of 69 years, Shirley Hargett of Charleston; two sons, Wayne Hargett (Teresa) of Charleston and Michael Hargett (Michelle) of Grenada; seven grandchildren; five great grandchildren; two sisters, Charlotte Richards (Bob) of Charleston and Peggy Vance of Tutwiler and three brothers, David Hargett (Carol) of Charleston, Steve Hargett (Donna) of Tupelo and Eddie Hargett (Charlotte) of Charleston.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Charleston Church of God, P.O. Box 22, Charleston, MS 38921.
