When the meal was served it sure didn’t look like the same thing offered in Mississippi!
Gary and I are on a little vacation in Chicago.
While here we have gone to the planetarium, learned a great deal on a river tour about the architecture in Chicago and its history, and eaten some unique Chicago food.
The deep dish pizza and the Chicago hot dog are two things we tried out — and realized we aren’t in Mississippi anymore!
The pizza was delicious, but it didn’t look like pizza we are used to. It has a buttery crust baked in a deep pan topped with a unique, delicious pizza sauce. Then lots of cheese is added to the pizza, especially mozzarella, along with meats of your choice; sausage, bacon, pepperoni, or whatever! Unlike the thin, crispy pizzas, the deep dish pizza will take about 45 minutes to bake.
Then we discovered the unique hot dog served in the Windy City. Don’t let Chicago natives catch you putting ketchup on it! A poppy seed bun and an all beef hot dog start it off.
Then yellow mustard, sweet green pickle relish, chopped onion, fresh tomato wedges, a crispy dill pickle spear, and two sport or hot peppers top it off. All is sprinkled with celery salt. Yes, it’s somewhat messy, but surprisingly delicious.
Food is different all over our country; with each area putting their unique history and culture into the recipes.
Think about Daniel in the Bible. He is one my Biblical heroes. He was taken at a young age into Babylonia as a captive, along with other promising young men. There he was going to be indoctrinated into the culture, religion, language, literature of his country’s conquerors, and even have his name changed. Their education was to go on for three years.
One of the first challenges Daniel, a young Jewish boy with a faith in the one God Yahweh who followed the rules, including dietary, set down by the law, was being told to eat the King’s food every day.
Daniel decided he didn’t want to “defile himself with the King’s food, or with the wine that he drank.” Daniel 1:8. He asked to be given his simple food instead. But the steward was afraid Daniel would suffer and not be as healthy as the others eating the King’s food.
Daniel asked for a ten day test. He wanted to eat vegetables and drink water and see how they compared in health to those eating the rich food and wine. After ten days Daniel and his friends were “better in appearance and fatter in flesh that all the youths who ate the king’s food.” Daniel 1:15
God blessed Daniel and his friends and they surpassed the others. They were questioned by the King and he found them “ten times better than all the magicians and enchanters that were in all his kingdom.” Daniel 1:21
Obedience to God must be a choice made a person who has free will. God gives us commands for our own good because He loves us.
Don’t be tempted by the devil, the world, or the flesh to follow a way contrary to God.
The best plan is God’s plan, and He rewards those who are obedient.
“But Peter and the apostles answered, ‘We must obey God rather than men.’” Acts 5:29
