The last time Kirk Academy played Delta, they lost a 30-point contest in Marks. This time around, the Raiders came close to getting a win last Friday.
Kirk led Delta 14-11 at halftime only to see the Raiders from Quitman County rally for a 31-27 win.
On the girls side, David Montgomery’s Raiderettes improved to 10-1 on the season with a 49-17 victory over the Lady Raiders.
In the boys’ game, Blake Mattox led KA with 13 points. Taylor Leverette scored six points and Cole Bailey finished with four points. Noah Jackson and Riley Rea both had four points.
The junior varsity Raiders won a 35-23 decision over Delta.
Andy Redwine led Kirk Academy with 11 points. Caymen Legg scored nine points and Carter Mattox had eight points. Taylor Mullen scored three points, while Linton Carson and Jett Lewis both had two points.
Girls
Kirk (10-1) started slow against Delta and Winona Christian last week, Montgomery said the sluggishness could be attributed to the holiday break.
“We came out slow in the first quarter against both Winona Christian and Delta - largely do from being rusty from the holiday break,” Montgomery said. “Our defense was able to get us going in both games after the slow start.”
Senior Molly Lane led all scorers with 18 points against Delta. Freshman Charley Rose scored 12 points and senior Abby Beissel finished with 10 points. Classmate K.K. Bailey scored four points. Grace Defenbaugh and Emma Kirk each scored two points. Katie Grace King rounded out the scoring with a point.
The JV Raiderettes improved to 9-2 with a 46-12 victory. Rose led the scoring with 19 points.
Cecile Brister finished with 12 points and Charlee Sultan scored nine points, Anna Lyon Gatlin had four points and Ava Kirk finished with two points.
Winona Christian
The last time the Lady Stars and Raiderettes met, Kirk needed a steal and layup at buzzer by Lane to win a 30-28 decision. It wasn’t close this time as KA used a 20-9 second period to break open a close game at Winona to win going away, taking a 45-22 decision.
Lane was again the leader Lane again was the leader for Kirk with 18 points. Bailey and Beissel had nine and seven points, respectively. Rose scored five points and Brister finished with four points. Defenbaugh rounded out the scoring with two points.
In the junior varsity girls game, Kirk won a 31-20 decision over Winona behind eight points from Rose. Sultan scored seven points and Gatlin had six points. MacKenzie Knight and Cecile Brister both had four points. Abbie Mattox scored four points.
Boys
The junior varsity boys edged Winona 38-33 as Carson had 13 points and Redwine added 12 points. Carter Mattox finished with six points and Gregg scored four points. Lewis chipped in two points and Caleb Mattox had a point.
In the varsity boys game, Kirk dropped a 72-19 decision to WCS. Blake Mattox scored six points to pace the Raiders. Jackson and Carson both had three points. Rea, Bailey and Matthew McWhorter all scored two points. Alex Flautt had a point.
Kirk was scheduled to return to action Tuesday as they open Class AAAA, District 1 action hosting Marshall Academy. Results were not available as of press time. Thursday, the Kirk teams travel to Oak Hill for games beginning at 3 p.m. Friday, the teams make the trip to Cleveland to face Bayou Academy beginning at 2 p.m.
