PUBLIC NOTICE
Former Camp/Fort McCain: U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District, seeks input on establishing a Restoration Advisory Board
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District, would like public feedback no later than June 10, 2025 regarding interest in establishing a Restoration Advisory Board (RAB) for the Camp/Fort McCain Formerly Used Defense Sites (FUDS) property, located in Grenada and Montgomery Counties, Mississippi.
The former Camp/Fort McCain was established in 1942 and was used as an infantry training camp through 1946. Approximately 13,250 acres of the original 42,073 acres was set aside for the National Guard. The remaining land entails approximately 28,820 acres and is mainly used for agricultural purposes (cotton, soybean and timber farming), but also for industrial purposes, with a limited number of residential areas. The Camp/Fort McCain Range Complex was comprised of an artillery impact area, an anti-aircraft range, multiple small arms ranges, a live grenade court, a demolition area, practice grenade courts, and an infiltration course. Between 1946 and 1990, several landowners within the property reported ordnance findings.
The Savannah District is investigating portions of the property under the FUDS Program.
The Savannah District encourages community involvement in the environmental restoration process, and a RAB is one method the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers may use to facilitate public participation at a FUDS property. RABs provide a collaborative forum for the community, government agencies, tribes and decision makers to discuss and identify the most efficient and productive means to restore the environment. Members of a RAB would meet regularly to review and comment on technical documents and plans relating to ongoing environmental investigations and restoration activities at the Hancock County BGR FUDS property. Members would serve as volunteers and provide individual advice to decision makers on environmental restoration plans and would be expected to serve as liaisons with the community and be available to meet with community members and groups.
