This week, The Grenada Star spotlights Alexia Gavin, Grenada Area Chamber of Commerce representative and owner of Gav & Co. Boutique.
Q: When and where were you born?
A: I was born in Grenada on April 12, 1997.
Q: Where did you attend school?
A: I graduated from Grenada High School and went to college at Northwest Community College.
Q: Where all have you lived?
A: I have just lived here in Grenada.
Q: Where do you work? Tell us about your job/company.
A: I work at the Grenada Area Chamber of Commerce where I am the Greater Grenada Chamber representative. I have been here since June. I handle all of the retail side of the chamber, and I take care of the Grand Openings and ribbon cuttings and anything they need in house. I also opened up a clothing boutique back in 2020. I have women’s clothing and accessories and I just recently added children’s clothing.
Q: What led you to your profession?
A: I really like business. Having my own business allows me to be a part of the community and that is what I like about both of my jobs. They both work hand-in-hand on making sure I am involved with the people in the community.
Q: What do you enjoy most about your job?
A: I like having the opportunity to meet new people, and again, I just love getting to be out in the community.
Q: What was your first job?
A: My very first job was Spencer’s Dairy Kreme.
Q: Who is the person who has been most influential in your life?
A: I would have to say my grandmother, Mary Hurd. She shows that tough love and she also pushes me every single day, even when I don’t want to.
Q: If you could relive one day from your life, what day would you choose?
A: The day I gave birth to my first-born child. That was something else. I can laugh about it now, but that was something to go through at that time.
Q: What is your spouse’s name? What does he do for a living?
A: His name is Cory Gavin and he works for Resolute. Most people still call it the paper mill.
Q: Do you have any children?
A: I have two children, Madilyn Grace Gavin and Lauren Victoria Gavin.
Q: If you could have anything for your last meal on earth, what would it be?
A: Oh, that is easy. I am going to have a 10-ounce steak cooked medium well with broccoli and cheese and loaded mashed potatoes.
Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?
A: I would love to go to Dubai. It looks so beautiful and peaceful there.
Q: What hobbies do you like to do in your spare time?
A: I like to read and shop, and I love to eat. I am about to start teaching a hip-hop class at A Leap of Faith Bungee Fitness and I can’t wait to do that. It is going to be so much fun.
Q: What do you enjoy about living and working in Grenada and Grenada County?
A: First of all, this is home and always will be. Secondly, my work family is the absolute best. We all have something to bring to the table and we work so well together. We all have Grenada in our best interest; we want the best for our town.
Q: If you could have lunch with anyone from your life or history, who would it be and why?
A: Steve Harvey. He is very influential, he has all of his ducks in a row and looks like he would be so much fun to hang out with. I feel like I could not only have a good time with him, but I could learn a thing or two as well.
Q: Would you rather read a good book or watch a good movie and why?
A: I love a good Netflix movie, so I would have to say watch a good movie.
Q: What moment in your life has had the biggest impact on you?
A: I think when I opened my boutique was the moment that impacted me the most. We didn’t take out a big loan to get us started, we just said, “let’s do this,” and we did it. It was a huge leap of faith for me and I am so glad I did it.
Q: What would be the No. 1 thing on your Bucket List?
A: I want to win the lottery.
Q: If you could describe your morals in three words, what would they be?
A: Trustworthy. Reliable. Honest.
Q: How would you like to be remembered?
A: I want to be remembered for the things I did for my community. I want to be remembered for the way I treated people. I want to know I left a legacy and made a difference in my hometown and community.
