Below is a political press release from Attorney General Lynn Fitch:
Attorney General Lynn Fitch today issued a statement applauding passage of SB 2781, a bill to create the Mississippi Access to Maternal Assistance (MAMA) program:
Even under the very best of circumstances, pregnancy can cause a stir of questions for a new mother. There is an abundance of programs available to help pregnant women, new mothers, and young families navigate the many challenges and questions that arise at this stage of life. But we need to make it easier to connect these opportunities with the women, children, and families that need them. This new MAMA program will do just that.
By creating an easy-to-use website and app, we can put all the various opportunities together in a one-stop shop. These include public programs, but also a wealth of resources provided by non-profit and faith-based programs. The agencies the Legislature has included in this program - the Mississippi Department of Health, Mississippi Department of Human Resources, Mississippi Department of Mental Health, Mississippi Departmentof Child Protection Services, Mississippi Department of Workforce Development, Mississippi Department of Employment Security, and the Mississippi Division of Medicaid – demonstrates the breadth of possibilities we can tap into to make the MAMA program a comprehensive guide for pregnant women and new parents.
My office is excited to create the MAMA program and work with these great partners to establish a model program to help new families grow and thrive.
Supporting pregnant women and new mothers is a key agenda item on The Empowerment Project, General Fitch's legislative agenda to empower women and their families. Click here to learn more about The Empowerment Project.
