The Grenada County Board of Supervisors held its first meeting for the month of December at the Courthouse. All five supervisors were present for the meeting.
One of the main topics of discussion was a request by Emergency Operations Center head Trebia Rodgers to extend the current burn ban, which has been in place since Sept. 20 and was scheduled to end on Dec. 4.
Rodgers said that the county is still in a severe drought despite weekend rains that soaked the county. She also said that the county had 46 grass fires for the month of November.
The Supervisors took no action on the ban, allowing it to expire.
Rodgers also asked for authority to re-apply with the Mississippi Emergency Management Association for the storm siren located at Fire Station West in Geeslin Corner. The Board approved that request 5-0.
In other action, the Board announced that Dec. 21 would be the day for the swearing in of new county officials. The event will take place at the Courthouse, beginning at 10 a.m. Newly-elected officials are slated to assume their duties on Jan 1, 2024.
Approval was given by the Board to authorize payment of claims including the credit card report for the month. The monthly receipt report, land redemption report, Justice Court settlement report and jail meal logs were given and approved.
The Board also approved Sheriff-elect Garrett Hartley to attend a newly-elected sheriffs course Dec. 3-14 in Pearl at a cost of $600. The Supervisors and newly-elected Supervisor were approved to have an additional night to attend the Mississippi Association of Supervisors New Term Orientation Dec. 6-7 in Flowood.
Approval was given for the temporary closing of Sweethome Wye Road for the installation of a water tank.
The Board also approved the inter fund loan repayment of $8,350 from the Grenada County Collection Fund to the General Fund.
The next meeting for the Board will be Dec. 18.
