Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 11, 2024, at McKibben and Guinn Funeral Service in Grenada for Ms. Phyllis M. Mathis, 92, of Grenada, who died on Sunday, April 7, at her residence. Burial followed in Coffeeville Cemetery. Dr. Brent Barker and the Rev. J. Barry Worrell officiated. The family received friends one hour prior to the service on Thursday, April 11, at McKibben and Guinn.
Phyllis was born on Sept. 29, 1931, in Royal Center, Ind., the daughter of the late John and the late Ruth Guy Magee. She enjoyed a long career in administration at Heatcraft in Grenada. She was a devoted and faithful member of Emmanuel Baptist Church in Grenada. In retirement, Phyllis spent countless hours serving with the Pink Ladies at Grenada Lake Medical Center. She also worked as a volunteer at the Grenada League for Adult Development (GLAD) helping countless adults in our area learn how to read.
In addition to her parents, her daughter, Lynn Herron; her sister, Mary Carlson, and one brother, Doug Magee, preceded Phyllis in death.
Survivors include, her son, Freddie Chapman (Anita) of Grenada; one brother, Dale Magee of Royal Center, Ind.; son-in-law, David Herron of Charleston; five grandchildren, Clay Herron (Angie), Emily Flautt (Alben), Melissa Chapman (James Gilmer), Caroline O’Brien (Brennan) and Cameron Chapman (Christina) and 13 great grandchildren, Ashley Herron, Kaleigh Gilmer, Aubrey Claire Flautt, Drew Snyder, Trey Gilmer, Lily Snyder, Sadie Snyder, Allie Flautt, Elizabeth O’Brien, Penn Flautt, Bryland Gilmer, Thomas O’Brien and Alice O’Brien.
Cameron Chapman, Alben Flautt, Penn Flautt, James Gilmer, Clay Herron, David Herron, Brennan O’Brien, Thomas O’Brien and Drew Snyder honored Phyllis by serving as pallbearers and carried her to rest in Coffeeville Cemetery.
