Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 11, 2022, at Wilson & Knight Funeral Home in Greenwood for William Albert Meriwether Sr., 80, of Carrollton, who went to be with the Lord in the early morning hours of Tuesday, Feb. 8. Burial followed in Evergreen Cemetery in Carrollton. The Rev. Rupert Ingram officiated. Visitation was held from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 10, at Wilson & Knight Funeral Home.
Albert was born on Feb. 23, 1941, in Carroll County, the son of the late Claude and Robbie Noland Meriwether. He lived in Carrollton and attended Carrollton Presbyterian Church. He was devoted to his wife and loved spending time with her and their children. He was a retired electrician, learning the skills early and eventually building his own business. He also enjoyed cattle farming and was still active on the farm where he and his wife made the cattle their pets.
Albert was an avid hunter and fisherman, learning from his father. He talked often of fishing and hunting memories with cousins and friends. He also enjoyed teaching his children and grandchildren about his love for these activities. He was willing to attempt almost any job and was almost always successful with the endeavor. He never met a stranger and had a zest for life. He lived as he was, “larger than life,” and he truly enjoyed visiting with others and working hard to support his family.
The love that Albert had for his family was evident to all who knew him. His grandchildren surely knew that Grandy was proud of them and that they could always count on his support and encouragement.
Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Betty Minyard Meriwether of Carrollton; children, William Albert (Ginger) Meriwether Jr. of Holcomb, Susan Meriwether (the late Jay) Leake of Oxford and James Claude (Christina) Meriwether of Carrollton; sister, Shirley Meriwether (G.B.) Gill of Kilmichael; six grandchildren, Hayley Rae Meriwether, William Austin Meriwether, James Wyatt Meriwether, Meredith Claire Meriwether, William Albert Meriwether III and Alexander James Leake and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were his grandsons Austin Meriwether, Wyatt Meriwether, Will Meriwether and Alex Leake, and nephews, Mack Gill, Gray Gill and David DuBard.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Evergreen Cemetery, P.O. Box 425, North Carrollton, MS. 38947; Carrollton Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 201, Carrollton, MS. 38917 or your favorite charity.
