A Celebration of Life Service was held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 8, 2023, in the chapel of McKibben and Guinn Funeral Service in Grenada for Verma McCuiston “Freddie” Barrett, 99, of Jackson, who died peacefully on Saturday, July 1, at her residence. Burial followed in Grenada Memorial Garden. Visitation with the family was held one hour prior to the service on Saturday, July 8, in the chapel.
Freddie was born on April 10, 1924, in Montgomery County, the daughter of the late James Harper McCuiston and the late Minnie Bell Elmore. After her daughter entered college, Freddie began a professional career as a supervisory unit clerk at the University of Mississippi Medical Center-Grenada, retiring after 16 years. She was an active member of the First Methodist Church of Grenada for many years. She was very loving and devoted to her family and her church.
Freddie had a wonderful sense of humor, was creative and was always kind and smiling. She loved to entertain family and friends. Her favorite pastime was shopping with her daughter at every opportunity.
Her loving husband of 69 years, Tommy Barrett; her parents; her brothers, Herbert McCuiston, Eric McCuiston, Winfred McCuiston and Wallace McCuiston, and her sister, Alicee Worsham, preceded Freddie in death.
Survivors include, her devoted daughter, Pshon Barrett, and several caring nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
Pallbearers were Mike McCuiston, Blake McCuiston, Bedon Lancaster, Mike Duke, Ward Brister and Al Cooper. Honorary pallbearers were David Clark and Stanley Ellis.
The family would like to express a special thanks to Freddie’s very devoted caregivers, Lorraine Ross, Kesha Veals and Rebecca Bronson, for their years of tender care and service as well as Accent Care Hospice and Sitters, LLC.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be directed to Joni & Friends, 795 Woodlands Pkwy., Suite 108, Ridgeland, MS 39157 or the charity of the donor’s choice.
