One elected official is facing misdemeanor simple assault charges after being arrested last week by the Grenada Police Department.
Longtime Grenada County Tax Assessor/Collector David Melton faces simple assault charges after being arrested last Wednesday. According to the Grenada Police Department, Melton was arrested, questioned and released moments following his arrest. The police department said the case involves a complaint against Melton, resulting in his arrest. Grenada Police Chief George Douglas would not go into detail about the type of complaint that was made against Melton, but did confirm his arrest.
The Grenada Star contacted Melton last Friday afternoon for his side of the story. He quickly responded, “there is nothing to it.”
Melton maintained his innocence, calling the claim untrue.
“This is a bunch of lies that people are spreading about me,” Melton said.
Melton has been Grenada County Tax Assessor/Collector for the past 30 years.
Douglas said the case remains under investigation.
