Ashley Kuhn, the second longest tenured football coach in Grenada High School football history, has announced his retirement after 12 seasons running the program.
Kuhn made the announcement to his players during a meeting Wednesday afternoon at the Grenada High School Athletic Fieldhouse.
Kuhn finished his career with an 82-61 overall mark in 12 seasons leading the Chargers. His teams won division championships in 2015 and 2020. His contributions to the program didn’t go unnoticed by current Grenada School District Athletic Director Dr. Lyle Williams.
“His record speaks for itself,” Williams said. “He has won more games than any coach in Grenada School District history. While Coach Kuhn has been here, we have had more football players get scholarships and players make it to the NFL. His hard work, intensity and passion will be missed.”
This season, 15 former players Kuhn coached at GHS were on junior college and four-year rosters. He has three current NFL players with J.J. Russell and Genard Avery and on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers roster, along with Tyre Phillips with the New York Giants. A fourth player, Mississippi State’s Emmanuel Forbes Jr., has announced his intention to declare for the NFL Draft in April 2023.
Kuhn’s first win came on Aug. 19, 2011, when Grenada upset Oxford 16-15. He had a 14-11 win over Tupelo back in 2014, and upset West Point 28-21 in overtime back in 2020 at Grenada.
The 50th win for Kuhn at GHS came on Oct. 27, 2017, when the Chargers shutout Lewisburg High School 41-0. He became the all-time winningest coach at GHS back in 2020 following a 12-10 win over Lake Cormorant High School.
Williams said a search for Kuhn’s replacement will begin immediately.
