With the changing of the colors to fall, it also signals the start to the 2022-23 soccer season at Grenada High School. The Chargers and Lady Chargers opened their seasons last week with a pair road contests.
Last Tuesday, the teams were in Columbus to face the Mississippi School of Math and Science. When the night was over, GHS had earned a split with girls winning a 3-0 decision and the boys losing a 2-1 contest. The teams then traveled last Thursday up the road to Batesville to face South Panola in a pair of matches. Again, the teams split with the girls winning 4-0 and the boys dropping a 2-0 contest with the Tigers.
In the girls’ game, Allison Escobedo scored the first goal for Grenada on an assist by Demi Burney to make it 1-0 in the first half of play.
Escobedo made it 2-0 with a goal in the second half using an assist from Katelyn Fulgham. Chloe Gillis scored the third goal on an assist from Escobedo.
Against South Panola, Gillis opened the scoring on an assist from Allison Escobedo and followed with a goal on an assist from Gillis. Aubrey Edwards, Briella Simmons, Mallory Willis and Layla Escobedo were the defensive standouts.
First-year boys coach James Denton saw his Chargers battle Mississippi Math and Science to a 1-1 first-half tie behind a goal from Aiden White in the 23rd minute. MSMS scored the winning goal midway through the second half.
Denton was pleased with the play of eighth-grader Daniel Hopper and goalie Luke Hardin, who had 10 saves.
Against South Panola, the Chargers got an outstanding defensive effort from Jaxon Moore.
