The Grenada High School baseball program will host its inaugural Field of Dreams Game at 6 p.m. today, Thursday, Sept. 19, at Charger Field.
It’s an event to honor the Special Needs Children in the Grenada School District, according to GHS head baseball coach Justin Flake. Flake was part of these games while coaching at Heritage Academy and DeSoto Central High School.
“At two of my previous schools, we had our baseball guys volunteer to help with the Special Olympics,” Flake said. “It’s something that we wanted to start at Grenada.”
Flake said 40 children from the District will take part in the event.
“We will have our players and diamond girls help us,” he said. “Each participant will get a few at-bats and have a chance to go around the bases. It will be a night to shine the spotlight on them and have a good time on our field.”
Admission is free, but donations will be accepted. Money raised at the event will go to the special education departments at all of the District’s schools.
Flake added that an Autism Game is scheduled for April at Charger Field.
