Following an opening game cancelation due to inclement weather early last week, Grenada High School’s baseball teams went on to finish 2-1 during the first week of the 2023 season.
The varsity Chargers finished the week 1-1, while the junior varsity finished 1-0.
Last Saturday afternoon at home, Grenada’s varsity erased a 3-0 second-inning deficit against Bayou Academy with six runs in the bottom half of the frame to take a 6-3 lead en route to a 12-5 victory. The Chargers banged out 15 hits in the seven-inning contest.
Seven Chargers finished with two hits including, Thomas Kuhn (RBI, 2 runs), Drew Klinck (RBI), Preston Downs (double, 3RBI, run), Ethan Klinck (double, RBI, 2 runs), Jacob Yarborough (double, RBI, run), Amari Conley (double, run) and Eli Palmer (RBI, 2 runs) to lead Grenada’s offense. New Albany
After Grenada’s season-opener against Desoto Central was canceled due to weather concerns, the varsity Chargers opened the season last Friday night against New Albany in frigid temperatures that forced a junior varsity game cancelation.
Junior lefty Jude Westmoreland pitched a one-hit gem through the fifth inning, striking out 13 batters and allowing one walk and no earned runs only to see a 2-0 lead disappear in the top of the sixth as New Albany scored five runs. Ethan Klinck pitched the final 1 2/3 innings, allowing two hits, two earned runs and striking out three to suffer the loss.
Offensively, GHS managed only three hits – singles – from Downs, Conley (RBI) and Ethan Klinck. Drew Klinck drove in one run. Defensively, the Chargers had two errors.
The Chargers were scheduled to host Olive Branch Tuesday with junior varsity action beginning at 4 p.m., followed by the varsity at 6 p.m. Results were not available at press time.
