Over the last decade, Grenada County’s population has slightly declined, but by less than only 300 people, according to the 2020 U.S. Census.
According to the report taken last year, Grenada County’s population is now 21,629 compared to the 21,906 in 2010. The decline reflects only a drop of 1.2 percent, one of the lowest in the region.
Two weeks ago, the U.S. Census Bureau released statewide population data and Congressional apportionment figures, showing the State of Mississippi with a population of 2,961,279. In the 2010 census count, Mississippi had a population of 2,967,297, so the state’s resident population has declined by 0.2 percent, according to the nation’s once-a-decade headcount.
Of Grenada’s neighboring counties, Yalobusha County showed the next lowest with a population decline of 1.5 percent. Yalobusha County’s population currently shows 12,481 compared to 12,678 in 2010. The highest of the surrounding counties would be Tallahatchie County’s 17.3 percent.
Across the Magnolia State, DeSoto, Harrison Lafayette, Lamar, Madison and Rankin were the only counties in the state showing a population increase of 10 percent or greater.
Out of that group, Lafayette showed the greatest increase calculated as a percentage, and DeSoto saw the greatest growth as a numerical value.
Most counties in the state saw a population decline, 65 in all.
The trends of growth and decline reflect increasing population away from Mississippi’s rural areas and toward urban and suburban areas.
