The days leading up to Thanksgiving were busy for Grenada Soup Kitchen Director Barbara Benson and her team of volunteers.
The group was busy preparing all of the holiday favorites – chicken and dressing, green beans, a variety of casseroles and much more – as they prepared to feed more than 300 people in need. The final touches were being placed on the smorgasbord of food last Wednesday at the kitchen located at 42 Church St., in Downtown Grenada, near Spain’s Supermarket.
The Grenada Soup Kitchen was founded by Cora Ford Ingram, but is presently managed and operated by Benson. Not only does the kitchen feed needy families, individuals and shut-ins during the holidays, but also twice weekly. Benson also needs help in the garden planting, growing, and harvesting fresh vegetables/fruits for the soup kitchen.
According to the latest statistics released by the USDA, there are 3.9 million households in America in which both adults and children are food insecure—which means they have limited or inconsistent access to food which is both nutritious and safe. Hunger during the holidays is not just a soft issue of feeling that every family, no matter how poor, should be able to gather together for a decent holiday meal.
