An event has been scheduled for Monday, Aug. 2, where free COVID-19 vaccinations will be distributed to those that have not yet received the shots.
The free COVID-19 vaccination event is sponsored by the Grenada School District and the University of Mississippi Medical Center–Grenada and will take place at the Grenada Armory Main Building – the old National Guard Armory – on Jackson Avenue.
According to school and hospital officials, the event is scheduled from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m. Individuals that haven’t received the vaccination yet are encouraged to take part.
The shots are available to GSD staff, parents and students ages 12 and older. According to officials, a parent must accompany students receiving that vaccine.
“We encourage the people that aren’t vaccinated to do so,” Dr. David Daigneault said. “We’re encouraging them to do this for the safety of themselves and the safety of others. With the start of school right around the corner, we’re watching this every closely.”
The Pfizer vaccine will be the one administered, which requires two shots to be effective against COVID-19. UMMC will return to the Armory in three weeks to administer the second dose.
“The numbers are picking up and there’s a surge of COVID-19 cases,” Dodie McElmurray, CEO with UMMC – Grenada said.
GSD is acting in accordance with the Mississippi State Department of Health’s request for school districts to offer accessible vaccine locations.
