Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 14, 2021, at the Mortimer National Funeral Home Chapel in Grenada for James Newton “Son” Collins, 89, who died on Friday, Oct. 29, in Fort Myers, Fla. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery in Grenada. Visitation will be held from noon until service time on Sunday, Nov. 14, at Mortimer National Funeral Home.
James was born on Sept. 3, 1932, in Grenada, the oldest of 10 children born to the late Guy James Collins and Lula Mae Johnson Collins.
James was a truck driver for many years and loved being on the road. He also enjoyed traveling by car and seeing the country. He enjoyed telling stories about his travels and his life experiences. He was a veteran of the United States Army, having served during the Korean Conflict. James was a loving dad, brother and granddad.
His parents, Guy and Lula Mae Collins; three wives, Esther Collins Harrison, Janie Eudora “Sunny” Collins and Sharon Dale Collins; one son, James Collins; three sisters, Linda Carol Garner, Doris Neal and Mary Joyce McNatt and two brothers, Paul Collins and Ray Collins, preceded James in death.
Survivors include, his two daughters, Lana Marie Verplank and Deborah Jo Moloznik; two sisters, Barbara Ann Logan and Jenaile Costilow; two brothers, John Roy “Shorty” Collins and Billy Wayne Collins and five grandchildren, Christopher Verplank Jr., Brittany Verplank, Connor Verplank, Tanner Verplank and Laura Clarke.
