(It was very interesting to find the announcement of Roy Acuff’s upcoming performance at Alva in 1939. However, in following up on the announcement, I have not located an article reporting on the performance. If any reader knows the end of this story please let me know! The progress of a community is often noted at the end of an old year and the beginning of a new year, which is soon to be here. Newspaper articles from various years record the changes and progress made in Grenada in today’s column. My you all have a safe, happy, healthy and prosperous New Year 2023!

Roy Acuff and the Smoky Mountain Boys will be at the Alva High School at Sweatman, Miss., on Wednesday night, January 3rd for a personal appearance. These boys appear regularly over the Grand Old Opry program over station WSM each Saturday night.
This program, the benefits from which will go to the school, should be liberally patronized.

The store next door to L. Friedman’s, formerly occupied by the Meaders Furniture Co., is undergoing some repairs and alterations, which is going to make it one of the pretty stores of Grenada. It is to be occupied by the Rail Road Wreck Store.

A unit of the Mississippi Tic Toc Restaurant Corporation is being built on the extreme southeast corner of the First Baptist Church property on the corner of Second and Main Streets in Grenada. We understand that the building is to be of the pre-framed class, arriving ready to rest on the piers and then bolted together. Nothing is to be sold for over five cents. Mr. Clyde Horn is to operate this restaurant.

A new form of recreation will be available to the people of Grenada Friday evening when the American Legion opens a skating rink at the American Legion Hut on Mound Street. The Legion Skating rink will be opened to the public Friday, December 30 at 7:30 p.m. The second set of skating begins at 9:00 p.m. Admission is 40 cents each period. Operation of the Legion’s skating rink will be under the direction of Bill Murray.

About 300 children in the second, third and fourth grades began attending classes in 19 rooms of the new Elementary School building Thursday, Miss Lizzie Horn, Principal announced.
Two rooms of the fourth grade are in the new school and two in the old annex. Also in the annex are the fifth and sixth grade students. Miss Horn said she didn’t know when the school would be completed.

Ben Franklin Store to be located here
The building formerly occupied by Piggly Wiggly is being remodeled by City Lumber Co. and has been leased to the Ben Franklin Corporation, which will have a variety store here.
G.C. Brannon, vice-president of the Jitney Jungle Corporation, now of Florida, owns the building. Sam Simmons said the building would be ready for occupancy by the Ben Franklin Store by January 1.
