A Grenada family has lost everything following a mid-week fire that caused extensive damage to their Govan Street home.
Kaunytra Loggins stood outside her family’s one-story, brick home last Wednesday, June 7, just after noon as smoke billowed from the rooftop. Firefighters with the Grenada Fire Department fought flames from outside the home and also entered the structure in hopes of containing the blaze.
Loggins said that she was thankful to get out of the burning home safely.
“I was knocked out asleep,” she told a friend from her cell phone. “I’m glad I smelled it.”
According to reports, GFD units were dispatched to a house fire on West Govan Street just off Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard at 12:45 p.m. on Wednesday, June 7. All GFD stations responded to the call. The first firetruck arrived on scene one minute later and firefighters observed heavy smoke coming from structure.
“Fire crews found that the fire was located in the kitchen, above the stove,” GFD Assistant Chief Hollis Wade Bloodworth said. “In addition to an interior attack, crews used a ladder to access the roof to extinguish hot spots around the vent pipe.”
According to Bloodworth, the home suffered heavy damage to the kitchen and smoke damage throughout the house.
“I lost everything,” Loggins said Sunday evening. “Water damage and smoked out.”
The fire was under control at 1:34 p.m.
“It was determined that the fire started accidently on the stove in the kitchen,” Bloodworth said. “Electricity was disconnected from the house for safety.”
Loggins lived in the home with three other people — one female and two males. The Grenada Star will accept new and gently used clothing, hygiene items and new and used home and kitchenware donations at its office located at 355 W.
