With the strong possibility of wintry weather mix Thursday afternoon into Friday and possible remnants leftover Saturday, Grenada and Winona are teaming together to keep their residents in need of shelter warm.
Grenada resident and volunteer Emily Brown and Calbrina Woods of Blessings for All Empowered by Faith in Winona teamed together and requested assistance from the City of Grenada to shelter their neighbors from the frigid temperatures. Grenada officials answered their pleas and will open the Lewis Johnson Senior Citizen Complex, which is listed through the American Red Cross as a Warm Safe Shelter, at 5 p.m. today, Wednesday, Jan. 8, for all citizens that need a safe, warm shelter.
According to city officials, once a person is checked in, they must stay for the night. According to Woods, Winona residents began being transported from the Community House to Grenada at 2:30 p.m. today.
The Lewis Johnson Center is located at 299 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. It will remain open until further notice.
