Last week, the Grenada High School varsity softball experienced the highs and the lows of what is high school sports.
The lows took place last Monday to open the week at Saltillo High School located in Lee County just north of Tupelo. Grenada managed just three hits and had two errors as Saltillo won a 3-0 decision.
Grenada returned home last Wednesday to face Lake Cormorant, a team that upset GHS 3-2 at Lake Cormorant on March 19. The Lady Chargers exacted payback, pounding out 13 hits en route to an 11-1, six-inning victory.
With the action, the Lady Chargers were 13-6 overall and 5-3 inside Class 6A, Region, as of Monday.
“Our mental approach was not very good and it showed in how we played against Saltillo,” head coach Leslie Lancaster said. “We were a totally different team against Lake Cormorant – we swung the bat, defended the field well and were solid pitching.”
Lake Cormorant
Grenada had a pair of four-run innings to go with a two-run first inning. Five of the Lady Chargers hits were for extra bases.
Senior Morgan Clayton led the attack going 3-for-4 (2 doubles, 3 RBI, run). Senior Lillian Mattox chipped in with a double and 2 runs, while classmate Olivia Lashley was 1-for-2 (RBI, 2 runs). Senior Mary Taylour Wilbourn (RBI), junior Grace Ann Tucker (RBI) and freshman Malori McClain each had one single each.
