Kirk Academy soccer coach Chris Wilkinson was hoping his Raiderettes wouldn’t have a letdown when they traveled to Clarksdale last week to face the Lee Academy Fillies in division action.
The Raiderettes were coming off a big 5-4 penalty kick win over Indianola Academy and hoping to keep things going against the struggling Fillies, who were winless on the season. Kirk had seven different players scoring as they cruised to an 8-0 win.
Kirk improved to 2-2 on the season with the win and 2-0 inside the district.
“We set out against Lee to play the way we wanted to play,” Wilkinson said. “I thought we passed and moved the ball well the entire contest.”
Abbie Mattox paced the Raiderettes with two goals and two assists. Lylah Kate Burnett had a goal and an assist. Emily Lane also finished with a goal and an assist. Emma Kirk chipped in two assists and Cecile Brister had an assist. Lilly Horan, Abby Redwine and Sophie Brister all had a goal.
Alyssa Duke had a big day with two saves in goal.
“Defensively, we did a really good job limiting their shots at our goal,” he concluded. “We are beginning to play soccer like I thought we would.”
Kirk was scheduled to travel to Greenville St. Joseph for a match Tuesday. Results were not available as of press time. On Thursday, the Raiderettes host Regents School of Oxford at 5 p.m. with junior varsity to follow.
