Grenada’s Phillip Messina joined other outstanding middle school students from across the nation last month to take part in a unique academic and career-oriented development experience, as part of the Junior National Young Leaders Conference in Washington, D.C.
In addition to being an A student at Kirk Academy, Messina, who is an incoming freshman, is active in sports including baseball, football and tennis. He won first place in the MAIS local Kirk and District Science Fair, as well as first place in local Kirk and MAIS district spelling bee. He was awarded for highest average in eighth-grade history and honors science courses. He is the son of Dr. Joseph and Cheri Ann Messina.
Messina was nominated to attend the June 21-30 forum by his eighth-grade English teacher, Lillian Hayward. He has dreams of one day obtaining a career in medicine or law.
“I was very excited about attending this program as an opportunity to further develop personal skills conducive for a successful future,” Messina said.
At JrNYLC, students build the confidence and skills needed to excel in high school, college and the workplace. They learn how to adapt to and communicate in new situations, to new challenges and with new people, which given how rapidly the world is changing due to technology and innovation, are essential skills for success.
